Registration

BRP or RNI? Start with the length and purpose of your stay.

BRP is the resident registration route for people who will normally live in the Netherlands for more than four months. RNI is the non-resident route generally used for stays of four months or less.

BRP

  • For residents staying more than four months
  • Register with the municipality where you live
  • Normally complete registration within five days after arrival
  • Your address and personal data are recorded

RNI

  • For non-residents staying four months or less
  • Register at an RNI municipality desk
  • You receive a BSN without resident registration
  • It is not a substitute for BRP when you become a resident

Changing route

If a short stay becomes a longer residence, contact your municipality promptly. A prior RNI registration does not remove the need to register as a resident when BRP conditions apply.
