Schools

Start school research before the move, then confirm placement after your address is known.

Children may attend primary school from age four, and compulsory education generally begins at age five. Admission processes, catchment rules and waiting lists vary by municipality and school.

Identify the school type

Compare local Dutch schools, newcomer language classes and international education based on age, language and expected length of stay.

Contact schools directly

Ask about availability, catchment rules, intake dates and language support before relying on a property location.

Prepare records

Bring identity, address, previous school reports, vaccination information and any learning-support documentation. Ask whether the BSN may follow later.

Notify the municipality where required

Municipal education or attendance services may support placement when a child has no school or needs newcomer education.
