How to register with a GP in the Netherlands

A Dutch general practitioner (huisarts) is your first point of contact for most non-emergency healthcare and usually coordinates referrals to specialists. Register soon after you have settled, even when you are healthy.

Step-by-step registration

1. Arrange your BSN and insurance details

Practices commonly request valid identification, your BSN and the name and policy number of your health insurer. Dutch basic insurance covers GP consultations without using the compulsory excess, although tests, medicines or referred care can affect your excess.

2. Find practices near your postcode

Search ZorgkaartNederland, your insurer's provider finder or local practices. Check the practice website before applying: many accept only patients living within their service area and some temporarily close registration.

3. Apply directly to the practice

Use the online registration form or call the doctor's assistant. Register every family member separately. Do not treat an online submission as acceptance until the practice confirms it.

4. Transfer useful medical information

After acceptance, provide a current medication list, allergies, relevant diagnoses and important records from your previous doctor. Ask how the practice handles repeat prescriptions, online appointments and out-of-hours care.

If practices are full: contact your health insurer and request care mediation (zorgbemiddeling). The insurer can help identify a GP accepting patients. For urgent but non-life-threatening care outside office hours, first call the local huisartsen-spoedpost; do not arrive without calling.
