BSN and temporary housing

A temporary address does not automatically mean registration is impossible.

The decisive question is whether the municipality accepts the accommodation as your actual residential address and whether you can provide the required evidence.

Quick answerTemporary accommodation is not automatically disqualified from BRP registration, but the municipality decides whether the address and evidence are acceptable. If you will live in the Netherlands for more than 4 months, you should still plan to register as a resident within 5 days of arrival and contact the municipality early when the first address is temporary.

Choose the correct route

Staying more than 4 months?Start with resident BRP registration in the municipality where you actually live.
Can the temporary property support registration?Ask the provider for written occupancy evidence and ask the municipality which documents it accepts.
Address rejected or provider will not cooperate?Ask the municipality whether another lawful residential address or a correspondence address is possible. Municipality approval is decisive.
Appointment is later than day 5?Keep the earliest booking confirmation and contact record. A waiting list does not change the need to act promptly.

Ask the accommodation provider

Confirm in writing whether municipal registration is allowed and what occupancy evidence they can provide.

Check your municipality

Municipal requirements differ. Ask whether a booking confirmation, occupancy declaration, host consent or rental agreement is sufficient.

Prepare alternatives

When the address cannot be registered, ask whether a correspondence address is legally available in your circumstances. Do not use an address where you do not actually live without municipal approval.

Keep appointment evidence

If appointment capacity causes delay, retain booking confirmations and correspondence showing that you attempted to register promptly.

Scenarios newcomers actually face

Hotel for the first 3 weeks

Do not assume the booking is registrable. Ask the hotel and municipality before arrival, and line up a fallback if the municipality requires different proof.

Serviced apartment for 2 months

A longer booking can strengthen occupancy evidence but does not itself guarantee BRP acceptance. The municipality still decides.

Evidence checklist

  • Passport or accepted identity document.
  • Booking, rental or occupancy agreement showing the address and dates.
  • Provider consent or declaration when the municipality requires it.
  • Civil-status documents requested by the municipality.
  • Appointment confirmation and written correspondence if capacity is delayed.
Do not solve a temporary-housing problem with a false address. If you do not have a usable home address, ask the municipality about the formal correspondence-address route.

Official starting point

The municipality makes the final registration decision. A hotel or serviced apartment policy does not override municipal law, but it may affect the evidence available.
